PNEUMATOSIS CYSTOIDES INTESTINAILS

Abstract
A case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis seen at Presbyterian Hopital of Taegu was reported and a review of recent literature related to this case was presented in the aspects of pathogenesis, clinical course and symptomatology and histopathology.
The pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a common disease in hogs, but it rarely occurs in man. As to the etiological factors, there is no generally and definitely accepted theory. More than 300 cases have been reported in the literature.
The present case was that of a 37 year-old Korean man who had the lesion in the terminal ileum with the complication of intestinal obstruction. An association of the disease with an ulcer of the duolenal bulb was noted in this case as was shown in average 56% reported cases.
The mechanism of the gas reaching the terminal ileum from the ulcer of the duodenal bulb in this case can be explained by Stiennon¢¥s theory. However, it is probable that more than one mechanism participates in the formation of gas cysts.
The post-operative course is uncomplicated in this case after the resection of the terminal ileum affected by gas cysts.
